A young girl, the victim of her stepmother’s hatred and jealousy, is driven out of her home and chased down by a paid assassin who shows mercy and lets her go free. She finds a haven in the woods with a group of strangers who give her protection until she is discovered to be alive by her wicked adversary who resumes the attempts upon her life. She is finally rescued, her wicked stepmother receives her just punishment and the young girl and her hero live ‘happily every after’.
Sounds familiar doesn’t it?
The story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is based on an old German folk story which was re-written by the Brothers Grimm and first published in 1812. The original tale is scary and quite gruesome in places with mention of murder and even cannibalism. Thankfully for more modern (and younger audiences) it was made into the much loved animated film by Walt Disney in 1937. Being his first full-length film and possibly his most popular, it earned him an honorary Oscar award in 1939.
Snow White is one of the most popular Disney ‘princesses’, and the classic Disney film is as popular now as it was so long ago. But why is the tale of Snow White so popular? Of course the triumph of good over evil is always satisfying and we’re glad that the Wicked Queen gets her ‘just deserts’. Maybe it’s the strange but comical dwarfs, the pretty and innocent young girl who is initially so cruelly treated, or perhaps it’s the handsome Prince who falls in love with Snow White, that grabs our imagination. Whatever it is, the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves has remained popular and much loved for generations.
